The Resolution Copper Mine is a multi-billion dollar copper
mine approved by federal action in 2014 to start operation.
The mine is locaded about 100 miles east of Phoenix, Arizona
near Superior. While there are obvious differences with Iron
Mountain/Iron Springs in Cedar Valley, an intrusion of iron
ore, there are similarities, which make this project a good
analog for expectations for an Iron County lightning analysis.

Possible Iron Mine Extensions, Iron County, Utah
The topography differences between the Iron Mines and
Cedar Mountain is greater than between Superior and
Resolution Copper. It will be interesting to quantify
the impact of topography on lightning strike density.
Those that live in west Cedar Valley talk about how
there is much more lightning by the Iron Mines than
anyplace else in the valley. This is likely due to
magnitite. It should be possible to map the iron extent,
which opens a source of project funding for the County.

Iron County Will Benefit from a Framework
The first step in county planning is to have an accurate
estimate of natural resources. If the sweet spot of iron
production has yet to be identified, it would have a major
economic impact on Iron County. Likewise, thermal alteration
halos showing burial locations of gold, silver, or rare earths
open new tax doors for the county. These opportuniites
are separate from mapping resistive aquifers, exploring for
geothermal energy, defining lightning hot spots to better
monitor and prevent a major forest fire, or simply knowing
where there are more lightning strikes for safety planning.
