Lightning databases are collected for commercial purposes.
The owners of these databases did not realize they could be
used for natural resource exploration. DML obtained an
exclusive license to sublicense these data for larger areas
and for long periods of time, specifically for exploration.
Once an area to analyze has been identified, the data are
ordered, cleaned, processed, and packaged for the client.

Determine Application of Lightning Data
Lightning occurs everywhere. Knowing lightning strikes are
not random and are actually tied to electrical currents in
the shallow earth opens many different doors as to how this
data can be used. The maps of lightning attibutes and the
rock property volumes derived by processing and "stacking"
many years of lightning data provide an evergreen framework
(where additional data is continually being added) for
evaluation, integration, and interpretation in the different
disciplines, processes, and activities shown below.

Integrate Lightning Data with Other Data,
and interpret the results to create an evergreen framework
for various county activities. For instance, Iron County has
good reason to be concerned about lightning starting a large
forest fire with all of the bark beetle killed timber on the
eastern mountains. Knowing that lightning strikes cluster,
and mapping where these clusters occur, will allow the county
and the forest service to optimally place wildfire monitoring
stations and/or video cams, which will decrease response time
and reduce the possibility of a major disaster on the mountain.
