Lightning data, collected for insurance, safety, and meteorlogy purposes, has been
stored in a useable format since 1998. Dynamic Measurement LLC (DML) defined
how to use this data for passive natural sourced electromagnetic (NSEM)
evaluation of geology. DML obtained an exclusive license to the data for
natural resource exploration, has 1 issued patent, and 1 pending patent.
DML Co-Founder, H. Roice Nelson, Jr., moved back to Cedar City in 2014,
and plans to use Iron County to demonstrate the value of lightning anaysis.

Price for Lightning Analysis of ~3,150,000 acres
Lightning analysis is much cheaper than other geophysical analysis approaches.
At $85,000 per square mile, it would cost $417,945,000 to collect 3-D seismic
over this area. With 500 meter line spacing, an aeromagnetic survey over this
area would require 225 112 kilometer lines. At $10/km it would cost $252,000
and at $120/km it would cost $3,024,000 to collect aeromagnetic data covering
Iron County. The standard price for a lightning analysis for this area is $185,129.
One option is for the county to pay for the survey, in exchange for exclusive rights
to resell subsets of the survey for aquifer evaluation, mineral exploration, oil and
gas exploration, identifying lightning hot spots for forest fire prevention, etc.
