Mining Subsea | A major mining operation for massive seafloor sulfides (copper, zinc, lead, silver, and gold) offshore Papua New Guinea, which is scheduled to start operations in the fourth quarter of 2010. From 153 holes drilled to a maximum depth of 19 meters, 38% terminated in sulfides, and they estimate 2.17 million tons at 7.2% coper and 6.2 g/t gold (about 18 tons of gold). This information was derived from a presentation by Steve Scott, Department of Geology, University of Toronto given at the IGC in Oslow, 12 Aug 2008. It appears there is need for AquaRobonautSM technology, although deep sea mining has taken a significant hit in the recent economic downturn. |
