Copycat

. . .

Another week, another journal entry:

Grant is beginning to play 'copycat'. The other night at dinner, Paul was laughing at something funny that Grant was doing. I think Paul was trying to not let Grant see his laugh by covering his mouth. Next thing we see is Grant putting his hands over his mouth and fake laughing. It took us a minute to figure out that he was copying Paul, but then we both started laughing even harder. Grant also tries to dribble his ball like Paul does. So, he throws it up in the air and by the time he gets close to it, it has stopped bouncing. This does not deter him and he tries to hit it with his hand. However, his feet usually get to the ball before his hands and he sends it rolling away from him. We were on campus the other day and while waiting for Paul to gather his stuff, we threw a racket-ball down the hall. He loved it. He would run as fast as he could trying to chase it, and when he got pretty close, he would bend down to pick it up with a little grunting noise. Apparently the halls at BYU are more slick than our floors because the ball would roll a little too fast and just miss his grasp. So, he would stand back up, run over to the ball and repeat the whole process several times before finally getting on his knees and crawling to it. I laughed out loud. What a funny little guy. Another incident with a ball that was not so funny happened earlier this week. Grant really enjoys throwing everything off the balcony and then starts crying "uh-oh" each time that he succeeds. I usually run outside and throw it back up to him. So, one morning Grant threw a ball off the balcony, yelled, "uh-oh" and I ran outside to rescue the ball; but I didn't grab my keys and I locked the door out of habit. Unfortunately, our spare key was in the house and Paul was on campus without a car. After a few minutes Grant started to fuss because he wanted to come down and play in the grass. Luckily, the 12 year old brother of my neighbor was just coming to visit; he scaled the balcony and unlocked the door for me. I am much more careful these days. We had a nice little visit with family at the Penny's last weekend. Grant was his usual curious self. At one time, Great Aunt Sara entertained him with empty plastic containers and milk lids. She would gather the milk lids and fill the containers with them as fast as she could and Grant would grab the filled containers and throw the milk lids up in the air as fast as he could, laughing each time. It was hilarious to watch. It's interesting that the best toys on the market can't compete with a creative playmate. Although, sometimes I wish they could - Grant wears us both out, but he sure is fun. I guess that is all.

Love,

Kate, Paul and Grant
