There have been 784 species extinctions identified as having occurred since the year 1500,3.255 and lists of extinct plants,3.264 and extinct animals3.265 are on-line. These known extinctions are one cause of genetic drift. An important aspect of this statistical impact on the gene pool is the population size. If the population of a species goes to zero, it is certainly a major impact on the statistics of the gene pool of that species.3.266

Just as there is an unconscious change in the gene pool, called genetic drift, there are unconscious changes in our languages, called linguistic drift.3.267 These language changes are especially seen in religious texts, which is because they have been around longer than most other types of text. John Tvedtnes highlights this change in language by quoting from the Wycliffe and King James versions of the same Psalm:3.268
