An event or situation is a nomological possibility 2.6 if it is possible, given the
laws of nature that govern our universe. Certainly, the above described fence is technically possible, although economically impossible. Today, these
laws of nature are described in mathematical terms. If one searches hard on the web, there are a couple of sites which consider mathematical
impossibility to be expressed by a probability number of one chance in 1050. This number is one hundred thousand billion, billion, billion, billion, billion.
Given such large numbers, whether from a scientific or a religious source, there needs to be tools for managing and understanding
them. Probability is one mathematical tool. Arvin S. Gibson’s book 2.7 describes several examples of early work on probability theory, work which spanned both
scientific and religious questions. For example, he describes one of the earliest books to address whether life could have occurred spontaneously on the Earth:
