Since seismic waves move through the
earth at velocities tied to the material they are moving through,
and the only data collection measurements seismologists make is
the travel time of the energy passing through the earth,
velocity data is critical in reflection seismology. The
velocity data allows geophysicists to translate travel-time
data to depth data and vice-versa. Acceleration data is most
often related to the science behind automobiles and airplanes.
However, as the derivative of velocity, this data and the
collection or calculation of acceleration data are as widespread
as velocity data. In oil and gas exploration and production,
pressure and temperature data
are typically tied to downhole engineering measurements.
Oceanographers, astrophysicists, and numerous other scientific
disciplines are based around collection and interpretation of
pressure and temperature data.
This may be stretching the analogy a little bit, and yet there are religious data tied to time events which can be correlated to the types of temporal scientific attribute data described above. For example: faith (velocity data), repentance (acceleration data), baptism by water (pressure data), and baptism by fire or The Holy Ghost (temperature data). These data are collected at key decision points of our individual lives. Particularly those of us who base our lives on faith based religious principles. In the same way velocity enables translation between travel-time and depth, faith allows translation between the spiritual and the physical sides of our lives. Recall the New Testament example of Jesus casting a devil out of a child, and the disciples coming and asking why they could not cast him out:
"And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed,
ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you."
Matthew 17:20
Taking the derivative of faith, i.e.
repentance, or our personal change of heart, there are numerous
strong scriptural statements about the impact of this personal choice.
