Subject: Several updates regarding Tools for Community Design and
Decision Making
Hello Tools Folks:
A little more than 6 months after our meeting in Stuart, Florida on Tools
for Community Design 'mff@ornl.gov'and Decision Making (TCDDM), I have a
number of relevant updates to share with you.
1. Just today, we finally got Peter Katz's presentation on "New Tools for
Community Design and Decision Making" up on the CESD website
http://www.sustainable.doe.gov/toolkit/TCDDM/
. The Beta version of thispresentation was passed out on CD-ROM at the Florida meeting.
We will continue to post basic information on land use planning and TCDDM
tools on our Center of Excellence for Sustainable Development (CESD) website
at
http://www.sustainable.doe.gov/toolkit/toolkit.htm.2. However, within a week, expect a message from Mike Ferreira at the
Florida House Institute announcing their new i4sd Website (I4SD= I'm "4"
Sustainable Development). This site will become the new home for much of
TCDDM information provided to you in the past via the National Center for
Appropriate Technology (NCAT) site at
http://www.ncat.org/comtool/. The sitewill include information on: upcoming meetings, proceedings for past
meetings, concept papers, an interactive tools matrix, etc. Mike is the new
webmaster for Florida House Institute and I expect he will do a much better
job at keeping the site current and useful.
3. Below, I have attached the proceedings from Florida TCDDM III. The
graphical "field notes" from this meeting will soon be available on the i4sd
site. We will provide everyone with a hotlink as soon as it is available.

4. Be sure to read Cindy Shea's TCDDM online article at:
http://sustainable.state.fl.us/fdi/fscc/news/state/0004/toolsind.htm
5. Regarding Regional Resource Centers: on May 25th, we had a meeting in
Denver involving several experts around the country on the concept of
Regional Resource Centers (
http://www.ncat.org/comtool/intro.htm). OnFriday, Vice President Al Gore announced a 30-point Livable Communities
Initiative to offer more choices to communities seeking to improve their
quality of life. Check out the report by going to
http://www.livablecommunities.gov/report2k.htm
. The 15th initiative (p44 onthe pdf document), entitled Community Livability Toolbox, in many ways, is a
continuation of our TCDDM efforts. The 19th initiative (p50) supports the
concept of Regional Resource Centers and proposes the establishment of a
National Livability Resource Center to provide better access to information
on federal resources, programs, and tools related to community livability.
I will post a more detailed update on the May 25th meeting on the I4SD
website before the end of June.
6. Below I have attached two Word documents on the newly conceptualized
Association for Better Community Design and Decision Making (ABCD2). One
from John Cleveland, our facilitator at the meeting, and a more recent one
from John Lambie proposing a role for the Florida House Institute in making
ABCD2 happen. These will also be posted on the I4SD website. Send John
Lambie your comments at jlambie@gte.net.

7. Finally, a Chicago TCDDM meeting is being planned. It will emphasize
the ABCD2 concept. Let us know if you want to participate in the planning
of this event. In preparation for this meeting and to make the distribution
of future notices simpler, we are planning on adding everyone to an
"announcement" listserv for Tools for Community Design and Decision Making.
Let us know if you do NOT want to be included on this listserv. (Don't
worry, you will not get inundated with too many messages from this
listserv).
That's it for now. Feel free to send me any updates relevant to TCDDM.
