. . . Ward Abbott's On-Line Outcrop Atlas

This page is the front end to a project that was started in 1988, which has a lot of similarities to the PETRIS AAPG protential project, and which we are still seeking funding.

Ward Abbot, retired Chief Stratigrapher at Shell, then retired Chief Stratigrapher at Occidental, has spent his entire career walking the outcrop. He has a fantastic library of outcrop, seismic, and well log analog images. The goal of this project is to scan these images, and to create a digital library of analog examples to guide and help interpreters. This library will be available through a common browser, locally on a workstation with a CD, on a local network, or even across the Internet.

At http://www.walden3d.com/Abbott there is a series of pages describing this project. These pages were put together back in early 2000, and have not since. The contents (http://www.walden3d.com/Abbott/contents.html> parallels the kind of information the AAPG is asking PETRIS to provide in a digital environment. The important thing is the effort put in by Dr. Pete Vail, Dr. John Sangre, Dr. Brad Macurda, Tury Taner, H. Roice Nelson, Jr., as well as Ward Abbott to develop a comprehensive indexing schema for the On-Line Atlas. This indexing schema (see http://www.walden3d.com/Abbott/indexing.html> can also be used as to provide XML codes for accessing data PETRIS digitizes for the AAPG.
