Context:

A significant benefit of the Infinite GridSM approach is the ability to capture legacy data. This set of examples demonstrates this using data captured with a digital camera from the 02 June 2002 Houston Chronicle insert: OFF THE CHARTS - Tropical Storm Allison Public Report. Once the data was captured, the images were stretched and rotated to all be the same size, and then placed as background in a data spread-sheet. This spread-sheet is called Allison_Data.xls, and can be downloaded by clicking here. With the data in a spread-sheet it is simple to copy one of the other spread-sheets and do operations between grid cells. For example, hcct_Allison.xls was created and can be downloaded by clicking here.

Example Showing Steps to Rectifying the Digital Photographs:

The merging and rectifying of these images was accomplished using Adobe Illustrator 9.0.
An image was captured showing the size of the Harris County Spread-Sheet
The Digital Photograph was placed semi-transparently over the Census Track Map, and stretched and rotated to rectify both imagesThe Digital Photograph was turned from semi-transparent to solid
The result was cropped to be the same size as the original Census Track MapThe White portions of the merged image were colored gray

Next Steps:

This example was put together to allow testing and experimenting with Infinite GridSM map operations. It is logical to next identify specific problems (political, governmental, environmental, etc.), capture data concerning these issues, and then to use the Infinite GridSM to derive a solution to the problems.
