. . . Example of capturing AAPG data with the Infinite GridSM
The 83 web pages in this directory were put together for PETRIS to demonstrate to the AAPG representatives the power the Infinite GridSM has as an organization and distribution mechanism for AAPG legacy materials.
The web pages are each organized similarily:
- The blue bar at the top of each page goes to an index [referred to as a Knowledge BackboneSM].
- The blue bar at the bottom of each page goes to a map index [referred to as the Infinite GridSM].
- The Infinite GridSM is a map interface to spatial information:
This is a raster approach to GIS (Geographical Information Systems).
Although there are scale advantages with vector approaches, the vector-based GIS systems
tend to be very complicated and require experienced technical support.
The raster based Infinte GridSM (IG) is a simple point and click interface.
In addition, it is possible to map the IG cells directly against a spread-sheet.
This allows users to quickly take data out of map files, and use it for data mining
and trend analysis purposes. With all of the data in the AAPG archives, it is expected
this type of interface will make this data more easily available to Mom & Pop Oil Company
as well as to all of the AAPG members in the largest super major oil companies in the world.
- A key consideration is how you capture the data. These examples were done with a SONY Digital Camera, with 1200x1000 pixel resolution:
With a project the size of the AAPG archives, a flatbed scanner with vacuum and fixed cameras is a much better solution (see jumboscan.com).
- Once data is captured it needs to be archived on a server. PETRIS certainly has sufficient capabilities to provide this service for the the AAPG.
- All of this good work will be of no use if the user can not easily and quickly find and get access to the information they are seeking. The "find" component is taken care of by the XML IG cells. The best known solution to the "quick access" component is the IRASNet work of Christian Singfield in Brisbane, Australia (see sautec.html
- Capture and distribution of the AAPG legacy data fits hand-in-glove with another project under way. In 1988 Roice Nelson and Ward Abbott started to develop an online analog atlas of outcrop, seismic, and well log images. There are over 800 images which have been collected, and this project is waiting for funding to get underway (see atlas.html)
